Slagle Roofing Helps a School in The Bahamas

Slagle Roofing Helps School in Bahamas

Mark Slagle, Luke Slagle, and Chris McDivitt of Slagle Roofing along with Don Oakes and Josh Watts, the youth pastor at Crossroads Ministries, together formed a team to help a school in the Bahamas.  Many people think of the Bahamas as a great vacation place, and there are indeed many beautiful spots on the island for tourist, however, the people of the Bahamas are in great need.  Several years ago Mark Slagle, president of Slagle Roofing and Construction, went on a mission’s trip to the Bahamas where he made a great connection with a local missionary.  This year he received an email calling for help to lay 2000 block to help a Christian school in Nassau, Bahamas.  Without question, when Mark saw the need, he began to recruit a team of men to go accomplish this great task.  They went down in May and spent 8 Days building the second story to a school that housed 180 students.  The school will now be able to double there outreach to the community.  The people of the Bahamas were very thankful for the work that Mark and his team did to improve their building.  Slagle Roofing and Crossroads Minsitries were happy to help meet the need for this school in the Bahamas.   Mark said “We are grateful that we were able to go down and help the Televos Christian School. We were just bodies, God made it all possible for us to go and serve him. God supplied our needs and the people of Televos Christian School needs thru us. Give him all the glory!”

Great group of guys

The more I learn about how roofing works and how business works the more I appreciate the guys that work for Slagle Roofing and Construction.  The company has to operate as a team to be successful.  With out good leadership it would fall apart and with out a great group of guys installing the best roofs there wouldn’t be a company.  We have took on a lot of work over the past few months because of our quality of work and referrals because of it.  We would like to add a few guys to help everyone out but it really is hard to find someone who wants to work and who you can trust.  We have a solid nucleus of guys who have been with Mark for years and then there are some new guys who we have hired who we knew through church.  God is the number on priority at our company and we would like create an environment where everyone knows that something is different about this roofing company.  The guys we have on our team are hard workers and know how to get a job done right.  This is a great attribute, especially for our customers to see first hand.  I have had many positive comments about how are roofers aren’t swearing and are polite.  Its always nice to hear that our guys are doing a good job.  Sometimes I guess I just get used to it because I haven’t been around any other crews or worked for any other roofers before.  I have asked around and everyone has said that its hard to find a good solid roofing crew that doesn’t have a laundry list of issues.  Well we hope that we can find a few more to help lighten the load for everyone, but if not we know that we are in good hands with they guys we got.

Is rain a roofers best friend or not?

There are many pros and cons with bad weather for roofers.  It is the perfect love hate relationship.  Weather is unpredictable and creates nightmares for scheduling work around mother nature.  Its been raining for three solid weeks in Pittsburgh and its hard to get much done.  The phone doesn’t stop ringing with people calling about their old roof leaking and everyone wants a new one put on now.  We have signed more contracts in the last three weeks then any other time during the year.  Production and customer service are the hard ones to juggle.  Once customers make the decision to spend thousands and sometimes tens of thousands to put a new roof, they want it done yesterday.  What about the customers that signed up a few weeks before who are still waiting because we are backed up due to non working conditions?  As Americans we are used to now, especially when it comes to spending money.  If we commit to it in our mind then we want it as fast as possible.  There is one good advantage out there by getting a new roof installed later then sooner.  The warranty starts after we finish, so if your roof can make it through one more rainy season that’s one more season the new one will make it through.  Rain obviously creates work for us but also impedes work at the same time.  It is a very interesting dynamic to have to constantly battle.  Roofers love rain days every once in a while because it gets them a day off but I know they don’t like 3 and 4 days off because then it starts to effect there pay and ability to provide for their families.

Some tips for customers:

1.) Have your roof inspected every few years and determine the life of your roof.

2.) If something does happen to your roof get it fixed in a timely manner so it doesn’t create more of a problem and it may buy you a few more years.

3.) Keep your gutters cleaned out.  Clogged gutters can cause an endless amount of problems to a roof.

4.) When deciding about the purchase of a new roof be more proactive rather then reactive.  Don’t wait til your roof is ready to cave in to pick up the phone.

5.) Keep in mind that any quality roofing contractor if you do decide to go with them will probably be 4-6 weeks from actually doing the work.  You don’t want John Doe roofing if they are sitting around doing nothing and just waiting to put your roof on.  Busy roofers are usually good roofers or they wouldn’t be getting work.

6.)  Spend a little extra money on the right kind of roof.  Most roofs last between 20-30 yrs.  So there is no sense of short cutting it.

7.) Extended warranties are always available but keep in mind the roofers still put the roof on the same way and usually if there is something wrong it will be found out in the first year or two which is automatically covered by any reputable roofer at no additional charge.  Use that extra money for leaf guard protection or roof maintenance program.

New Office

It has been so busy around here since the last time I posted.  For starters we have just finally moved into our new office space down in Monongahela, Pa.  We will be better able to service the valley customers better and are more centrally located for residential work.  We will still continue to have a big market share of the commercial roofing in Western Pa in all areas.  We have also joined up with our sister company Trinity Garage Door and Awning at our new location.  We have a store front window and they will be able to showcase the latest and greatest in the garage door and awning business.  Right through the back of their office will be Slagle Roofing and Construction Inc. corporate office.  Mark Slagle has his own suite which consists of an executive desk along with a custom built blueprint table and a small cable TV in the corner so he can stay up to date with the crazy weather.  Back a little further Ruthann has a desk and will be managing all the company’s day to day books and office duties.  Then my desk is there as well, decorated in Ohio St decor all around.  We have a conference room in the back and hope to have team meetings real soon.  Being down in Monongahela and right downtown gives the public a little more access to what we have to offer.  All of our real work takes place on the job but this gives us a place to call home and be in a position to let everyone know who we are and what we do.  We want to get more involved in the Mon Valley area as this is where we prefer to do more business.  We are excited about the upcoming summer and anxious to get some roofs on if it ever quits raining.  The list is getting long so we encourage everyone to get on it as soon as possible.  Well I will continue to blog a little more often now that I have a little more stability in the office and its 2 blocks from my apartment.

Its a little crazy around here

I just realized I haven’t blogged in a little while.  Time is flying around here as the weather goes from bad to good and then back to bad.  It seems like everyone that got prices in the winter is ready to sign contracts now and then everyone roofs that are leaking now want us out there immediately to give them an estimate.  I like to think its a very good problem to have, especially when “everyone” says we are in a bad economy.  Our major restaurant chain that we service is ready to get 6 new roofs and one of our real estate property managers has 3 or 4.  Not to mention we still have 2 schools we are working on and then there are all the residential customers to take care of.  This year has a lot of potential and we are excited about it.  Oh wait there is more, did I mention we will have a booth at the Pittsburgh Home and Garden Show from March 4-13.  10 days of non stop potential customers walking by our make shift store front.  I am really excited about it because we did a much smaller show in January and I received 30 leads and have gotten over $50,000 of work so far off it.

It takes a lot of time to build a good business but you can fast track your results by looking at every potential job no matter the size and treating customers the right way with fast response times.  The more good exposure we have the better and it will lead to big things down the road.

Big things such as our ability to help out on the mission field.  Mark Slagle is organizing two trips this year and I know he would like to do more.  Slagle Roofing keeps doing the right things and keeps the priorities in order and it seems like everything else comes into place.  God, family, and then work.  It seems like we have had a lot of each lately.
